JSON, YAML & DevOps config linter

Check JSON and YAML in your browser. Dockerfile, Compose, Kubernetes, GitLab CI and GitHub Actions are coming next.

Browser-only. JSON and YAML are live; Dockerfile/Compose, Kubernetes, GitLab CI, and GitHub Actions are coming soon.

Why valeditor is handy

  • Nothing leaves your browser. Linting runs locally, so your configs are never uploaded or stored.
  • JSON and YAML first. Strict syntax checks, with a line and column for every error.
  • Catches sneaky problems. BOM, duplicate keys and multi-document YAML split by ---.
  • Format, share, download. Tidy the text, send a link to a teammate or save the file.
  • More formats are coming. Dockerfile, Compose, Kubernetes, GitLab CI and GitHub Actions are on the roadmap.
  • Free, no sign-up. Open the page, paste your text, done.

How to use it

  1. Paste JSON or YAML into the editor, or open a file.
  2. Pick the format, or leave auto-detect on.
  3. Read the errors and warnings; each one shows its line and column.
  4. Format the text, then copy it, share a link or download the file.

What makes valeditor reliable

It checks more than brackets and indentation: it looks for the things that usually break configs after you commit.

Good to know:

  • Duplicate keys are reported instead of being silently overwritten.
  • A BOM at the start of a file is detected before it breaks a parser in CI.
  • Multi-document YAML is checked document by document.
  • Every error points to a line and column, so there is nothing to hunt for.
  • Large files are checked instantly because there is no server round trip.

Where it helps

  • Checking a pipeline file before you commit, instead of waiting for a red CI run.
  • Reviewing configs in a pull request and confirming the file at least parses.
  • JSON files such as package.json, tsconfig.json and app settings.
  • YAML for Helm values, Compose files and Kubernetes manifests.
  • Debugging a config pasted from a chat or ticket that fails for no obvious reason.

Frequently asked questions

What is valeditor?

It is an online JSON and YAML linter that runs in the browser. It finds syntax errors, BOM, duplicate keys and multi-document YAML problems.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser and the contents of your configs are never uploaded.

Which formats are supported?

JSON and YAML today. Dockerfile, Compose, Kubernetes, GitLab CI and GitHub Actions are coming soon.

What exactly does it check?

JSON and YAML syntax, a BOM at the start of the file, duplicate keys and the structure of multi-document YAML. Errors come with a line and column.

Can I lint Compose, Kubernetes and CI files right now?

You can check their syntax, since they are YAML. Format-specific rules for each of them will be added later.

Can I format, share and download the result?

Yes. You can tidy the text, copy a link for a colleague or save the file.

Does it support YAML with several documents?

Yes. Documents separated by --- lines are checked one by one, and errors point to the right place.

Is it free, and do I need to register?

It is free and needs no registration. Just open the page and paste your text.
